BUMMP Annual Student Symposium
May 2025
BASS is an annual event that provides mentors and mentees the opportunity to showcase their research and celebrate a successful year in BUMMP. With over 200 attendees this year, our mentors and mentees practiced communicating science through poster and oral presentations, networked at the opportunities fair, and heard the inspiring story of our keynote speaker, Dr. JoAnn Trejo.
UJC How to Read a Paper Workshop
In collaboration with the Undergraduate Journal Club, BUMMP hosted this workshop to help mentees become more comfortable reading and analyzing scientific papers. Small group discussions were led by mentor volunteers, and mentees were able to read and ask questions about current scientific literature.
Valentine's Day Social
Our socials are centered around our mentees, allowing them to take a break from studying and classes to come together and get their mind off of school. Attendees wrote cards to their mentors and learned origami!
Winter Social
Our socials are centered around our mentees, allowing them to take a break from work and build community with their BUMMP peers over friendly games of pool, foosball, table tennis, and more at the Game Room!
Med School Application Workshop
This professional development workshop was focused on our medical school-bound mentees and teaching them about the medical school application requirements and process. The presentation and discussion was led by current medical students who shared their experiences and gave encouraging advice.
Winter General Body Meeting
Our Winter General Body Meeting (GBM) was the first event of the winter quarter aimed at giving program updates. After the outside nacho bar, mentors and mentees heard about upcoming events and dates/deadlines as well as exciting researcg talks from two BRAP Scholars.
Research Blitz
Our research blitz provides mentees who are seeking research experiences with current opportunities to join a research lab at UC San Diego. Mentors whose labs are actively recruiting undergraduates presented their research in poster format and met many mentees enthusiastic about research. Many mentees find lab positions through this event!
Personal Statement Writing Workshop
This professional development workshop provides mentees with tips and tricks for writing a well-written personal statement, and the opportunity to receive feedback from mentors on their personal statements for graduate/professional school applications.
Welcome Lunch
Our first big event of the 2024-2025 academic year was the annual Welcome Lunch. On Stonehenge Lawn, mentors and mentees ate lunch and met their mentorship pairings and BUMMP pods!
Mentor Trainings
Our mentor training sessions are required for all new and returning mentors. In these sessions, we introduce our mentors to the new school year with BUMMP, our mission, and mentor responsibilities/expectations. Mentors practice culturally responsive mentorship while engaging with other mentors!
Mentee Trainings
Our mentee trainings are required for all new and returning BUMMP mentees. In the sessions, we provide information on our organization, our mission, and mentee responsibilities/expectations. Additionally, we provide a general overview of dates and deadlines for the fall quarter. Students also have the opportunity to engage with other mentees!
